Our Story

A New York Original

Gansevoort is a family-owned, independently operated luxury lifestyle hotel born in New York City’s Meatpacking District. Built by Michael Achenbaum and his father, we opened our doors in 2004, when the neighborhood was emerging as one of downtown Manhattan’s defining creative and social centers—a place where art, design, nightlife and taste were beginning to converge in a distinctly New York way.

Origins

From the beginning, Gansevoort was designed to feel like part of the neighborhood, not simply a hotel within it. We arrived at a moment when Meatpacking still balanced industry with after-hours energy, and when a new generation of restaurants, galleries, boutiques and nightlife destinations was starting to reshape the streets around us.

As a family-built and independently run hotel, we were free to create something with a point of view of its own. More than two decades later, that independence still shapes how we evolve, what we bring into the hotel and how we welcome guests.

Through the Years

Since opening in 2004, Gansevoort has evolved alongside the Meatpacking District—helping shape its nightlife, reimagining the hotel and introducing new ways to stay, dine, connect and recharge. Each milestone reflects the independent spirit of a downtown original that has never stood still.

Gansevoort Opens Downtown

  • Gansevoort Meatpacking opens as the neighborhood’s first luxury full-service hotel, bringing a new kind of hospitality to a district still defined by markets, warehouses and cobblestone streets. Family-built and independently operated, it is downtown from day one.

The Rooftop Sets the Rhythm

The rooftop becomes one of downtown’s most sought-after nights out, with lines at the door, DJs in the lobby and 360-degree city views above it all. Gansevoort is no longer simply in the scene—it helps set the rhythm.
